Music has the power to change your workout experience. In the last year, I have been trying quite a few different types of high-intensity workouts, from Betty Rocker to Fittlyss. And I have found that, when a groovy track comes on, tough exercises like burpees don’t seem as difficult anymore. The rhythm of funky tracks is often upbeat and motivating, but it’s more than that. Listening to feel-good groovy music just adds that something special to a workout, that get-down and enjoy it kind of feeling. Of course, music is personal, but here are some groovy tracks to add to your workout music mix, to inspire you to get down on it!
Prince is one of the funkiest musicians who ever lived. Add some of his tracks to your playlist, and you’ll be one step closer to having a groovy workout. Some of his tracks have a way of making the toughest exercises so much easier, by just filling the room with a feel-good groove that keeps you going. Just remember, if you’re in the gym don’t forget where you are, as you may get lost in the music and find yourself dancing instead. Prince has a way of pulling you in.

I’d recommend you get a few of his albums, starting with Dirty Mind, Controversy, Parade, The Black Album and Sign o’ the Times. Find your favourite tracks on each and create a playlist to test out on your next upbeat workout. You could also create a playlist on YouTube if you’re listening off your computer.
Best Workout to do with Prince: Home workouts with exercises like burpees, crunches, lunges. Routines where you’re doing a series of high-intensity exercises and then resting in between. Prince will make those crunches, lunges and mountain climbers (almost) a piece of cake.
When I first discovered Kiesza, I watched “Hideaway” over and over again on YouTube. I simply couldn’t get enough.
Besides her incredible voice and dance moves, she injects her music with an high energy, especially in “Hideaway”.
This is a track to add to your playlist – It’s upbeat and youthful, and simply… cool. It’s a feel-good track that motivates me during workouts, especially when running on the treadmill!
Best Workout to do with Kiesza: Running on the Treadmill. I find my groove so quickly and want to run for longer. Try and let me know what you think.
This music has a different kind of groove – more of a house disco vibe. Many of his tracks make me feel happy because they’re all just having so much fun making the music and it rubs off on me. Booty’s voice is very groovy too. I find myself smiling and wanting to break out into a dance. Sometime we get so serious about our exercising, that we forget to have some fun too.
Kool & The Gang
This is an American funk band, popular in the 1970s and 1980s. Their song “Fresh” is such a cool track – From the moment it comes on, it injects my workout with the happy upbeat vibe I am looking for. It changes the experience.

It’s uplifting! These videos remind me of how different music was back then. They’re all dancing, grooving to the music, absolutely loving it. It was so much more about the music than anything else, like getting the perfect Instagram shot. This kind of music brings that nostalgic happiness back, and it adds to something special to my workout experience.
